Our Taoist Funeral Service

We Are Deeply Sorry For Your Loss. Our Hearts Go Out To You During This Time Of Sorrow.

What are the typical procedures for a Taoist funeral in Singapore?

A Taoist funeral in Singapore typically starts with a wake, which can last for several days. The body is cleansed, dressed, and placed in a coffin, which is then put on display. There are usually altars with offerings for the deceased. The funeral concludes with a procession to the crematorium or burial site, accompanied by music and prayers.

What is the significance of the Taoist funeral rituals?

Taoist funeral rituals are believed to guide the deceased’s spirit to the afterlife and to provide comfort to the bereaved. They reflect the Taoist beliefs in the continuation of the spirit after physical death.

What is the duration of a typical Taoist funeral in Singapore?

The duration of a Taoist funeral can vary, but they traditionally last from three to up to seven days.

What should be the appropriate attire to wear when attending a Taoist funeral?

Traditional attire for a Taoist funeral is usually somber. White, black, or blue clothing is typical. Red, which is seen as a lucky color, is typically avoided.

What items are usually included in the Taoist funeral packages?

Funeral packages can include a range of services such as preparing the body, arranging the wake, providing funeral equipment and religious items, managing rites and rituals, and organizing the funeral procession.

How is the deceased prepared for a Taoist funeral ceremony?

The deceased’s body is typically bathed and dressed in white, which is the traditional color of mourning in Taoism. The body is then placed in a coffin, which is displayed during the wake.

What is the importance of the 'wake' in Taoist funerals and how long does it typically last?

The wake serves as an opportunity for friends and relatives to pay their last respects to the deceased and offer comfort to the bereaved family. The length can vary, but it traditionally lasts from three to seven days.

What is the significance of the offerings made during the Taoist funeral?

Offerings, which can include food, incense, and joss paper, are made to provide for the deceased in the afterlife and to appease spirits that might hinder the deceased’s journey.

Are there specific guidelines for non-Taoists attending a Taoist funeral in Singapore?

Non-Taoists are usually welcome to attend Taoist funerals. It’s important to dress appropriately (typically in somber colors) and to follow the rituals respectfully. If unsure about what to do, it’s best to follow the lead of other mourners.

How is the mourning period observed after a Taoist funeral?

What is Embalming, and is it necessary?

Embalming is a procedure carried out to delay decomposition of the body. The bodily fluids are removed, and are replaced with formaldehyde-based chemical solutions that will delay decomposition. It may be necessary, if you select certain arrangements, such as a funeral with viewing, or with an open casket. It is also typically done when the body is to be transported over long distances or across borders.

If you do not want embalming, you may choose an arrangement that does not require viewing. A funeral wake may still be held, as long as the body is placed in a hermetically sealed coffin (without a viewing window), for a period not exceeding 7 days after the death.

Note: Embalming may not be allowed if the deceased passed on due to certain infectious diseases, e.g. COVID-19 disease.
